Description

Introduction

People often think white pomfret is the only pomfret worth eating — but that’s just half the story. Black Pomfret, locally called Kala Paplet, has its own loyal fanbase, especially among those who love bold, slightly oily, and flaky-textured fish.

This fish is perfect for deep masala fry, spicy gravies, or tandoori-style marinades. Its rich meat, distinct flavor, and crispy skin when fried make it a favorite in many Pakistani kitchens — especially in Sindh and coastal Balochi cuisine.

At Gwadarseafood, we bring you fresh Black Pomfret caught from trusted coastal suppliers. It’s cleaned, cut to your preferred style, and delivered same-day — no freezing, no preservatives.

Why Kala Paplet Deserves a Place in Your Meals

Kala Paplet stands out for its balanced taste and cooking flexibility:

  • Soft, creamy flesh – Melts in your mouth, but holds shape well

  • Neutral flavor – Mild and clean, perfect for desi spices or light seasoning

  • High protein, low fat – Works well in balanced diets or fitness plans

  • Year-round availability – Consistently available in multiple sizes

  • Consistent cooking performance – Delivers reliable results every time

Whether you’re meal prepping or cooking for kids, Kala Paplet remains a dependable choice.

Names & Taxonomy

  • Common English Name: Black Pomfret

  • Local Name: Kala Paplet (also known as Halwa Fish)

  • Scientific Name: Parastromateus niger

  • Family: Carangidae

  • Order: Perciformes

  • Class: Actinopterygii

  • Phylum: Chordata

Habitat & Catching Method

Kala Paplet thrives in warm coastal waters of the Arabian Sea, especially over sandy or muddy seabeds at depths of 15–40 meters . It is typically collected using gillnets, hook lines, and light trawling — methods that safeguard the habitat while ensuring fresh catch.

Physical Traits & Texture

Black Pomfret has a deep, oval body with tiny scales and a faint, dark band beneath the skin. Its flesh is smooth, dense, and low in oil — which translates to a buttery texture when cooked. It’s this balance that makes it a favorite for grilling, frying, or steaming.

Size Options

Kala Paplet is available in multiple sizes to suit different needs:

  • Typically ranging from 200g up to 1.5kg per fish, depending on availability and cut preference

Cutting Options & Yields

  • Tawa fry with besan, chili, and lemon

  • Whole baked Kala Paplet stuffed with garlic and herbs

  • Steamed fillets with ginger, spring onion, and dash of soy

  • Classic desi curry with tomatoes and fresh coriander
